Fear this! 1984 in 2005?

Do I really want someone to know everything about me from an ID card? Isn't that what fascist totalitarian dictators tried about 65 years ago? Schneier on Security: REAL ID

While taking a break from my Masters

I decided to google myself (teach4food of course and no I do not own a Ford truck.. WTF!) and came up with one of my first sites. Back in the day when dial-up was king and the internet was new I worked on this site with three middle school students. It was a pretty cool contest and is still around (now sponsored by Oracle). My picture is pretty funny on it and as far as web design goes, this site lacks. Enjoy! ThinkQuest : Library : Manned Space Flight

National ID-Hitler would approve

A friend sent me this email he wrote. Very powerful, very true, very dangerous. Please read

-----------------

This one's pretty scary. Our government representatives are trying to attach a National ID card law onto an Iraq spending bill. It's already passed the house of representatives, it's moving on to the Senate and there's little doubt the idiot in the White House will pass this law, since he's behind it.

The problem? This one's going to have all your pertinent personal information, on an rfid transmittable card. This means anyone can pick up your info if they've got the right reader and access to your card. It means you'll be tracked wherever you go, whatever you buy, whatever you do - by law. This is about as distopian/totalitarian as it gets. What's the card nominally being introduced for? To combat terrorism. If you think for one second this ID card will do anything to limit terrorism, you need to get educated.

This is bad news, very bad news. This sort of thing needs a great amount of public disclosure and discussion - but junior wants to pull a fast one on us all and have the dept. of homeland security gain more unchecked power and resources (that's right it will cost you more tax dollars to support this thing). We've never needed a national id card before, we certainly don't need one now.

I urge you people to do something about it, get off your asses and write your Senators telling them that you don't want this thing snuck through the back door like this. Honestly folks, this is the kind of thing we used to belittle the Soviet Union for.....

Here's the bill itself

Here's a link to the Senate websites, it's very easy to find your Senators and send them an email telling them to vote against this bill:

So if society is getting smarter, are people just less observant?

Society is not dumber than 10, 20, or 100 years ago. We are smarter today. Kids will be smarter than their parents. Finally, proof to debunk the old saying "these dang kids nowadays... when I was younger blah blah blah"

Beware the Burrito!!

Of all the paranoid things to react to at school, this one is pretty bizarre. The whole school goes into lockdown over a massive 30" burrito. Hard to believe. I wonder how many kids will now carry burritos of their own to protect themselves. WFTV.com - News - Burrito Leads To School Lockdown, Armed Officers On Roof Tops
